The need to have things your way is a thing born of the need to survive. If you only cared about others and nothing for yourself your mental and physical health could make you barely able to function. If you have anxiety not having days and actives purely for yourself could make you unable to function in a social setting.
Yet sometimes ego can be a horrible thing. It can make you hurt the people you love. At times your friends and family need your help to get through tough times. Or maybe a classmate needs notes from a class they missed.
So what is a good way to balance your ego with selflessness?
You need to communicate with others as well as yourself. You need to start recognizing what your feelings actually mean. Intense hatred for someone could merely be you avoiding looking at a fault you know you have. If someone starts acting strangely it could be they're dealing with their own inner turmoil.
In that last scenario you need to be understanding and not pry for more information than the person is willing to give.
